A Nation in denial

Denial is spawned by an ignorance of reality and the instinct to hold on. It is like seeing everything from a moving bus but coming out of denial would require one to jump off the bus when in motion. As a nation we pretty much are on an indefinite bus journey seeing things what we want to see and not daring to take the plunge when needed. We learn of our "haq" and are told "ho raha hai Bharat Nirmaan". In a Nation where absolute poverty level currently is estimated to be higher than what our population was in 1947, "ho raha hai Bharat Nirmaan" is five decades too late. Rising social inequality is obscured by a few success stories.

Like telecommunications. The projected tele-density for 2012 was 84%. The pace of mobile telephony expansion in India has been truly phenomenal. Driven largely by private enterprise, the communications landscape in the country has changed dramatically in the last ten years. But it has been more than a 100 years since India first had access to electricity. At 70% access to electricity (intermittent), energy for India and many Indians is still a dream. Electricity, sanitation, water and basic healthcare hardly dominate any public discussion like telecom / IT. The marginalization of some has created a monster which is today India's biggest internal threat.

Naxalism. Or Maoism. At least the Government is not in denial about their threat. The Prime Minister has acknowledged growing naxalism as India's single biggest internal security threat. But it has come a decade too late. A period during which the movement has entrenched deep, and grown in both power and stature. A movement which threatens the Nation with confidence and puts down it's own demands with impudence. The latest naxal attack on a senior functionary of a national party did not create as much outrage as the nation's richest sporting body's corporate shenanigans.

Cricket is the common denominator in India. It is a balm in the guise of fevicol for a multitude of people across the Nation. And the BCCI has always acted in the best interest of - it's balance sheet. It is a stage on which the country's top two parties share the dais. An organization whose corporate governance has bordered on fraud, is so unmindful of the average expectation of the fan. Indians are tolerant on issues of governance, corruption and fraud. And intolerant in cases of religion, caste, race and gender equality.

How conveniently ignorant. Or you can say outrageously insensitive. Bad roads, non-existent sanitation and drainage, regular load shedding, etc are trivial subjects which reflects in the way public infrastructure is handled in India. On the other hand religious prejudices, differences in caste and stature, and general attitude towards women are generally subjects bordering on intolerance. No wonder India is one of the least ranking countries' when it comes to racial tolerance.

All that glitters is not gold. Not all that is spoken is true. The bus hurtles on and therein lies the choice. To jump or to sit.

Magical Malnad - Through the Third Eye

Home of coffee in India. Forested and verdant. Hilly with quaint towns. Malnad (or Malenadu) in Karnataka is one of those picture postcard regions.

Random

The England - India series is starting this Thursday. It is also called the Pataudi Trophy. Brazil and Argentina have played to take away the flamboyance from Copa America. Messi is still Messi and not yet Maradona. By the way, India beat Qatar 2-1 in Football. Yes, Football - not Kho-Kho or Kabaddi. Djoko maybe the joker, but he takes his game seriously, especially against Rafa. Justin Bieber is catching up with Lady Gaga in the popularity charts. But I seriously don't mind - I have started listening to Shivkumar Sharma and Zakir Hussain. Three blasts in Mumbai - where else would anyone aim if not the head? Rain washed away most of the evidence and a lot more. Sudden surge in monsoon activity - better not wear shoes to office. Projects increase, working hours decrease - what more to ask? Lots of travel coming up but nothing new coming up. Maybe this post is new, relatively - update found wanting for more than a year. Crazy - yes. Stupid - maybe. Foolish - if you so perceive. I am bored - maybe you too get here if bored.

PS : Some order in the randomness??

The significance of the dotted line.

It is ironic that Paradise on Earth is littered with trouble. By all accounts it is a joy to behold but it rots in despair. The sights still have the magnificence, like the music out of a santoor, but echoes of sadness. Of all the places to suffer from Partition, the Subcontinent lost its Paradise. It is where the bold line (the international border) is irrelevant, and only for official records. The dotted line (Line of Control (LOC)) is more significant amplified by the presence of the Border fence.

So whose folly is it that we lost the Paradise. Indians call the other side of LOC as Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir. For us it is an intrusion into our land, non-negotiable, period. How many of us know that our Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir is referred to as India-occupied-Kashmir? Kashmir and Jammu was one of the several princely states before partition given an option to accede to either India or Pakistan. At that time the region was Muslim majority. But the then Maharajah Hari Singh decided to remain independent. Then what followed was -> Pakistan attacked Kashmir, Hari Singh  asked India for help, India obliged but set conditions, acceded Kashmir to the Union of India.

Whom to blame? Public opinion in Kashmir at that point is still unclear. India cleverly used the opportunity to bag Kashmir but Pakistan was wrong in the first place to attack. Perhaps they felt cheated that a Muslim majority region was not rightfully theirs. The conflict continues. No side wants to give up their stand. It is a matter of pride rather than the lives of the people of Kashmir.

Then came the fcuk1ing terrorists. In their quest for power they hold conflicts such as Kashmir and Palestine central to their ideology. Fcuk them! Opportunistic scum just using the stage to lure innocent people to fight for their ends. As if they care for the people of Kashmir and Palestine. It is all power and pride. John Milton would have been sad to see in reality 'Paradise Lost'. We should only hope to compose 'Paradise Regained' as an epitaph to the martyrs of the Kashmir cause.

A Subcontinental Feast!

India won the hockey gold in Olympics uninterrupted from 1928 to 1956, six in a row and a total record of 8 golds. India's cause was helped by Dhyan Chand and 10 other players. Pakistan has won the same honours only three times, but the World Cup four times. (India only once)

Strange that Pakistan have won fewer golds than India in Olympics. But India seems to keep its record, whatever may be the context. The Indian team in 1928, 32 and 36 was also fairly represented from Lahore and Karachi.

The strength of the subcontinent in hockey has been phenomenal over the years, and so has been the popularity of the game. As the skills waned, so did success in recent times. Neither country can boast of being favourites in the World Cup. As they meet again today, amidst all the rivalries, and misunderstandings, and prejudices, and terror threats, and security; a brand of hockey specific to a region will be unleashed.

Har santh kahe, sadhu kahe, sach aur sahas hai jiske mann mein, anth mein jeet useeki rahe!

Three cheers for India and Pakistan!
